March 11th marks the 128th anniversary of the start of the Great Blizzard of 1888.
As much as 60 inches of snow fell over parts of New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts over the course of four days. Paired with winds up to 80 miles per hour, this led to snowdrifts as tall as 52 feet near Coney Island.
The storm took down telegraph lines, wrecked boats and blocked rail lines for days, leading to the creation of Boston’s subway system and the underground placement of communication lines in New York.
